Culture
Vanilla planifolia is a climbing orchid whose fruit, the pod, is one of the world's most prized spices. Although native to Mexico, the plant found its terroir of choice in Madagascar: the Great Island is now the world's leading producer and its 'Bourbon' vanilla sets the benchmark. Cultivation is concentrated in the north-east of the island, in the heart of the 'vanilla triangle', where green pods are harvested between May and August. Each flower is hand-pollinated, and each pod requires several months of curing before reaching aromatic maturity. This demanding crop relies on a network of smallholders, including 900 farmers partnered with the Biolandes group within a transparent, fully traceable supply chain.
Manufacturing
Our organic vanilla CO2 extract is produced from black Madagascan pods, within a supply chain where every step is documented and traceable back to the grower. The pods travel to the Biolandes group's Le Sen site in the Landes region, where they are processed by CO2 extraction, a technique that preserves the aromatic richness of the raw material. This sourcing relies on 900 Madagascan growers and comes with collective programmes benefiting employees and producers. Manufactured from organic raw materials, the extract holds organic certification.
