Osmanthus
Description
Origin and production:
Native to southern China, Osmanthus fragrans is an ornamental tree traditionally cultivated for its delicately apricot-scented flowers, which have been used for centuries to flavor tea. Harvested between September and October, the small flowers—ranging from pale yellow to vibrant orange—are hand-picked by shaking the branches and then preserved in brine.
These blossoms are used by local producers to create a concrete, which is later transformed into an absolute through alcohol extraction.
Olfactory profile:
Osmanthus absolute stands out for its fruity, honeyed, and leathery signature, with nuances of peach, candied apricot, plum, soft leather, and white flowers. Its rich aromatic composition gives it a prized place in fine perfumery, offering lasting intensity and a round, mellow heart note.
Applications in perfumery:
Refined and sensorial, osmanthus absolute is highly valued:
- As a heart note to enrich floral, fruity, or gourmand accords.
- In oriental, woody, or amber compositions, where it imparts a velvety effect and warm depth.
- In premium toiletry products—scented creams, body lotions, soaps, or mists—adding a soft and sophisticated signature.
This product has a pasty texture. To facilitate its use, gentle heating is recommended depending on its consistency:
• For pasty products or those that are difficult to handle at room temperature, you can either heat them slightly (e.g., in a water bath or dry oven) or use them directly with suitable utensils, such as spatulas.
Avoid exposing the product to high temperatures (do not exceed 40°C) to preserve all its natural properties. Once warmed or prepared, ensure you use clean utensils for transferring or applying it.
