Harvest
Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris) is a resinous conifer native to Central and Northern Europe, Eastern Siberia, and the mountains of the Middle East. It is distinguished by its reddish bark, persistent needles, and adaptation to cold climates.
Recognized since ancient times, Scotch pine has always held an important place in traditional medicine. Its wood and resin were used for their purifying properties, while its needles were valued for their fresh and tonic aroma. Even today, this tree remains a valuable resource in many fields, particularly in aromatherapy and perfumery.
The essential oil of Scotch pine is obtained through steam distillation of its needles, a technique that allows for the extraction of volatile aromatic compounds.
Manufacturing
Landema sources its Scotch pine essential oil from a committed local producer.
The process follows these steps:
Harvesting the Needles:
The scotch pine needles are harvested at maturity, usually in March or April, when their concentration of volatile compounds is at its peak.
Preparation:
The needles are sorted and cleaned to facilitate the release of the aromatic molecules.
Steam Distillation:
The needles are placed in a distillation apparatus. Steam is injected to heat and release the essences contained in the plant material. The aromatic vapors rise through a swan neck and then pass into a condenser.
Condensation:
The steam, now infused with essential oil, is cooled, allowing the water/oil mixture to condense and be collected.
Decantation and Separation:
The essential oil, naturally less dense, is separated from the hydrosol (distillation water) through decantation.
Filtration:
The oil is filtered to remove any potential plant impurities.
Storage and Quality Control:
The essential oil is then stored in appropriate containers, protected from light and oxygen, before undergoing chromatographic analysis to ensure its quality, purity, and compliance with our standards.
