Native to North America, the sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an iconic annual plant in the Asteraceae family. Known for its striking blooms and oil-rich seeds, it was introduced to Europe in the 17th century, where it quickly became an important cash crop, particularly in France, Ukraine, and Spain.

Now widely cultivated, mainly in temperate climates, the sunflower thrives in deep, sunlit soils. Its large flower heads follow the path of the sun—a phenomenon known as heliotropism.

The oil is extracted from dehulled seeds, which are rich in unsaturated fatty acids, especially linoleic and oleic acids. While recognized for its nutritional value, sunflower oil has also long been appreciated in cosmetics for its softening and protective properties.

The oil is obtained from ripe sunflower seeds that undergo several processing steps:

Cleaning and dehulling: The seeds are carefully cleaned to remove impurities and residues, then dehulled to separate the hulls from the kernels.

Cold pressing: The kernels are mechanically pressed at low temperatures to extract the oil while preserving the integrity of its fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants.

Filtration: The extracted oil is then filtered to remove any remaining particles and ensure a clear, stable final product.

This gentle method, free from solvents and chemical refining, yields a high-quality virgin oil, ideal for use in cosmetic, food, or technical formulations.

Application

Sunflower oil is widely valued for its fluid texture, good skin absorption, and high content of unsaturated fatty acids—particularly linoleic acid (omega-6)—as well as antioxidant vitamin E. It offers a gentle, versatile, and cost-effective base for a wide range of formulations.

It is commonly used to:

• Formulate massage oils, especially for dry, sensitive, or mature skin, thanks to its light, non-greasy feel.

• Nourish and protect the skin in body lotions, moisturising creams, soothing balms, or treatments for weakened skin.

• Enrich hair care products for dry, dull, or brittle hair: oil baths, nourishing masks, or hair serums.

• Soften lips and hands in repairing sticks and hand creams.

• Serve as a carrier for herbal oil macerates, due to its good oxidative stability.
