Harvest

For millennia, temperate regions of the world have seen the cultivation of over 100 species of plum trees. Our focus lies on Prunus domestica, a member of the Rosaceae family. Native to Asia and Europe, Prunus domestica is particularly widespread in Europe, especially in France, where the kernels used to extract our oil come from the Agen region in the southwest of the country. Classified in the Prunus subgenus of the fruit family, alongside peach, apricot, and almond, the plum tree is a precious source of plum kernel oil.

The plum tree is a moderately sized tree, reaching about 6 meters in height, with many smooth, spreading branches. Its oval-shaped leaves, sometimes pointed and slightly serrated, vary in color from bright green to dark green depending on the variety. The flowers, small and white, are grouped in 2 to 5 on short stalks. As for the fruits, they begin to form when the tree is between 3 and 4 years old and ripen between August and September. Oblong in shape, they have a dark brown or violet color and offer a flavor that is both sweet and slightly tart.

Plum oil first gained popularity in the French culinary sector for its ability to evoke the taste of almond oil and enrich confectionery with a deep flavor reminiscent of almond, complex and distinctive, more refined than that of almond oil. Initially used by chefs as an alternative to almond oil, it was mixed with neutral-tasting oils or paired with other flavors to create innovative culinary compositions. But its use is not limited to desserts; it is part of the growing trend of new oils explored by restaurants and food companies in search of original flavors to enhance dishes.

Manufacturing

Our plum kernel oil originates from the Agen region, located in the southwest of France. As part of our commitment to the circular economy and recycling, we utilize plum kernels that are considered waste from the food industry.

The kernels are then dried to remove any residual moisture. Once dry, the kernels are cold-pressed to obtain the oil.

The shells of the kernels are carefully transformed into plum shell powder, while the water used to clean the kernels is directed to the digester. This process converts the water into gas, thus contributing to the production of biofuels.

Plum kernel oil is distinguished by its richness in unsaturated fatty acids, with a content exceeding 60% oleic acid and reaching approximately 15% linoleic acid (omega-6).

Here is a summary of its composition in fatty acids:

Palmitic acid (C16:0): between 4 and 9% Stearic acid (C18:0): maximum 3% Oleic acid (C18:1): from 60 to 80% Linoleic acid (C18:2): from 15 to 25%

The unsaponifiable fraction of plum kernel oil is characterized by a remarkable concentration of tocopherol, reaching approximately 840 parts per million (ppm). The predominant presence of γ-tocopherol (vitamin E) gives this oil great resistance to oxidation.

Here are the quantities of tocopherol present in plum kernel oil, expressed in ppm:

Alpha-tocopherol: between 80 and 100 ppm Beta-tocopherol: maximum 5 ppm Gamma-tocopherol: from 600 to 750 ppm Delta-tocopherol: from 30 to 50 ppm

Sterols % :

  • Campesterol (4,5 – 5%)
  • Beta-sitosterol (83 – 88%)
  • Sitostanol (1 – 2%)
  • Delta-5-avenasterol (5 - 9%)

Barrier Repair Activity Plum kernel oil, with its high content of fatty acids, is known to have an emollient effect, which promotes the restoration of the skin's lipid balance.

Antioxidant Activity: Due to its high vitamin E content, plum kernel oil has strong antioxidant properties.

Photoprotective Activity: Alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) helps protect the skin against damage caused by UV rays, making plum kernel oil an ideal ingredient for sunscreen products.

Hair Care: Vitamin E plays a crucial role in preventing hair loss by improving skin microcirculation and protecting membrane lipids.
