Harvest
Mate, or Ilex paraguariensis, is a small-sized shrub native to South America, commonly locally referred to as "yerba mate." It exclusively grows in South American countries such as Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay.
Traditionally, mate was harvested from the wild, but in recent years, extensive plantations have been established in the southern regions of Brazil and Argentina.
Mate cultivation is primarily aimed at producing the famous South American beverage of the same name. This beverage is distinguished from tea by its smokier and more tannic flavors and is highly appreciated by indigenous populations in Argentina, southern Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay for its numerous benefits. Indeed, mate is renowned for its richness in vitamins and minerals, caffeine, vitamins B1 and B2, as well as potassium and magnesium. Its infusion is typically used to enhance concentration.
In addition to being a popular beverage, whether hot or cold, mate is also used in the perfume and cosmetics industry as a natural extract, thus offering mate absolutes and natural extracts in perfumery.
